You know that you need your cup of Joe to get you up and moving in the morning. But did you know that it can also help you live longer? Even though the researchers can’t figure out exactly why, people who drink a couple cups a day seem to live longer, with those who consume four or five cups a day apparently live the longest. With the average coffee consumer downing 3.2 cups a day, this level may be somewhat above average (or as we call it, Thursday), but who can argue with those statistics? Nobody’s saying that the coffee consumption is the cause of this new-found longevity, but are you willing to take a chance? Now if only you can get your doctor to write you a prescription for Starbucks…

Coffee News: Coffee as Medical Expense?

source: http://www.davesblogcentral.com/2012/01/good-news-for-coffee-addicts-lower-risk.htmlEvery time you turn around, there’s some new study that tells you that something you love is bad for you–salt, sugar, eggs, fat, doughnuts–the list goes on and on. That’s why we were excited to learn recently that our morning cup of Joe (well, maybe more than one cup) can actually do you some good. Turns out that heavy coffee drinkers carry a significantly lower risk of developing Type 2 diabetes than our less-caffeinated friends. So the next time you see your favorite barista, be sure to thank them for your good health. Do you suppose your Dunkin’ Doughnuts receipt is now deductible as a medical expense?

Studies have always gone back and forth on whether coffee is actually good for adults over the age of 65, but there are emerging studies that prove that moderation is the key to success. The biggest issue for active adults is that coffee has excessive caffeine, which has been known to increase blood pressure. However, with occasional drinking, coffee has the ability to provide a variety of benefits for all different areas of health. Decades of research have proven that coffee can help with the effects of Alzheimer’s disease, provided that it doesn’t produce any unwanted effects on other areas of health.

Drinking coffee in moderation has also been shown to provide mental clarity, as well as a reduction in the risks of many common diseases and health issues, including:

-Depression and suicide
-Type 2 diabetes
-Parkinson’s disease
-Liver disease
-Heart disease
-Possible aid in prevention of cancer

There are plenty of different studies that have been going on to help produce the various benefits of coffee drinking at any age, but the research to aid in understanding how coffee benefits seniors is definitely something to talk about.

There have been studies that have also shown a relationship between coffee drinking and improved sexual health in older adults. This isn’t a direct cause and effect relationship, but it is typically found that coffee drinkers have reduced risks of heart disease and other conditions that can eventually lead to limited sexual activity in older adults. There are also antioxidants and phytoestrogens that produce estrogen-like effects in coffee that can help reduce the risk of certain cancers and give people more benefits for their health, as well.

After doing health research and education for many years, it never ceases to amaze when new and emerging research like this that can change the way that people act or live in their daily lives. With the information that is given, it looks like coffee in moderation is a great option for any seniors who want to maintain a healthy life and enjoy their morning cup of Joe. It is not recommended to drink as much coffee as you used to during your younger years, of course, but a little bit here and there can definitely make all the difference. Just remember that when you’ve got issues like high blood pressure, you should make sure that you’re discussing the possible pros and cons of consumption with your doctor before you take advantage of the benefits of coffee for your health during retirement.
