man drinking coffee

A recent article suggests that the average American worker spends something like $1100 a year on coffee—that’s over $20 a week! When you compare that to the commute costs for that same worker, you’d be tempted to think that drilling for coffee might be at least as important as drilling for more oil. You know you’ve got to have that coffee, so how do you propose to make it more affordable? Maybe it’s time to try a cup from one of the other chains, or even a local coffee vendor. Joining affinity programs can get you a free cup after buying a bunch. And then there’s always the possibility that you could drink it black, instead of adding all the various flavorings and dairy concoctions that jack the price up. Or how about making it at home? You can grab a home drip coffee maker for a couple of bucks, or pick up a French press pot for not much more than pocket change. And just think: if you can score your cup of coffee for a cheaper price, you can drink even more of it!

Jarbee Maple Bacon Ground Coffee
Medium Roast
Price: Ground $6.95 1/2 pound; $11.95 pound

Jarbee Coffee was kind enough to send three free half-pound bags of flavored coffees to sample from their line of flavored coffees. Jarbee uses the finest gourmet Arabica coffee beans for their coffees, with your choice of whole bean or ground coffee. The flavored ground coffees we received were three of their top sellers: Peanut Butter, Maple Bacon, and Banana Hazelnut coffee.

Flavored coffees to me always provide a sense of fun and adventure. If you like flavored coffees, you’ll love the array of flavored coffees available online at Jarbee Coffee. Jarbee has at least 50 or more coffees with an amazing variety of flavors, there’s something for everyone. They also carry gourmet coffee blends, decaf and espresso, so you can buy your flavored coffee and espresso all in one place. A sampling of just a few of the flavored coffees includes: Jamaican Me Crazy, Vanilla Hazelnut, Raspberry Cream, Highlander Grogg, Rocca Mocha, Butterscotch Toffee, Irish Cream, Black Forest Cake, Almond Toffee Crunch, and Caramel Pecan Roll, to name just a few. Jarbees also features great coffee specials with coffee on sale for $4.95 per 1/2 pound of coffee.

I was intrigued with the idea of a Maple Bacon ground coffee, which is one of Jarbee’s most popular flavored coffees. Just handling the sealed coffee packages I could smell the aromas of each coffee before opening the package. When opening the package of Maple Bacon ground coffee, the medium roast coffee smells of maple. The Maple Bacon coffee was brewed with a French Press and it was tasted with and without half and half.

The Maple Bacon coffee when brewed has an aroma of maple. The real tasting of bacon comes when you sip the coffee. I let the flavored coffee cool a bit, flavored coffees to me are their best when the coffee is not scalding hot. When I tasted the Maple Bacon coffee I could taste maple most predominantly, with a finish of the savory bacon, just enough to get both flavors from the coffee. I can taste the flavors, but being adventurous I’d go for an even stronger maple and bacon in this coffee. This is an unique flavoring you’ll love, basically this coffee is “breakfast in a cup”. The sweet and savory combination is a great one. The Jarbee Maple Bacon flavored coffee is perfect for anytime of the day or ideal for laid-back weekends. If you like flavored coffees I think you’ll like the breakfast flavors of Jarbee’s Maple Bacon ground coffee.

When opening the package of whole beans the coffee bean aroma is strong and inviting. The Wild Weetamoo whole bean coffee was brewed with a French Press and it was tasted with and without half and half.

The Wild Weetamoo coffee when brewed looks dark and is as appealing as a dark roast can be. The flavors of dark, rich coffee accented with chocolate and fruit tones are delicious and somewhat sweet tasting. The coffee is smooth with surprisingly no bitterness for a dark roast coffee. I really liked the blend of beans in this Indonesia blend, I found the coffee very flavorful and a coffee I’d be happy to drink every day. This Indonesia blend is a fantastic way to start your day or to relax with over the weekend. I’m a big fan of dark roast coffees and Wild Weetamoo is a beautiful dark roast blend that won’t disappoint.

As soon as coffee beans are roasted, they start getting stale and losing some of their flavor and depth. Therefore, keeping it fresh should be one of your main focuses after you’ve selected your roast and flavor. There are several ways to ensure your coffee holds flavor throughout its whole use. The best solution depends on how much coffee you have and how quickly you can use it up.

In the Freezer

If you buy coffee in huge batches, you’ll probably want to store some of it in the freezer. Although freezing is not ideal for coffee, it is better than leaving it sitting on the counter for months. When you’re preparing coffee to store in the freezer, put it in airtight packaging and make sure each package contains no more coffee than you can use in two weeks. Then put it as far back in the freezer as you can manage to keep it away from light and fluctuations in temperature. Many “Whirlpool refrigerators” have freezer drawers which are perfect for this sort of situation. Lastly, remember that you should never refreeze coffee. Think of it like ice cream: you cannot let it melt and pop it back in the freezer expecting it to still be the right texture after it freezes again.

In an Airtight Canister

The ideal coffee storage solution is an airtight canister. You should really go out and buy a new canister for this purpose to make sure you get one that’s suited for coffee. In addition to having an airtight seal that will last a long time, you want your canister to be opaque so the beans aren’t exposed to light. Purchase a canister slightly larger than the typical bag of coffee, so you can be sure to fit all of the coffee in the canister whenever you open a new bag.

Additional Considerations

The type of coffee you purchase also affects its freshness before it even gets into your home. Pay attention to the following freshness factors when you are at the store.

First, whole beans are better than ground ones because you get to grind them right before you use them which preserves more of their flavor. Second, valve-sealed bags tend to contain fresher coffee beans than vacuum-sealed bags because the beans let off carbon dioxide for several days after they’re roasted. The roaster has to let the beans sit until they’re done with that process before they can go into vacuum-sealed bags; whereas, the valve-sealed bags can have freshly roasted beans. But if you do have to buy pre-ground beans, vacuum-sealed bags are better because they keep ground beans fresher for longer.

Now that you’re an expert on keeping your coffee fresh, go out and get some freshly roasted beans, grind them at home, and start sipping. Chances are, you’ll taste some subtle flavors you never noticed before, and you’ll never go back to stale coffee.

Marley Coffee
Mystic Morning Medium Roast Ground Coffee
Price: $9.95 8 oz.

Marley Coffee was kind enough to send us free coffees to sample from their line of six ground coffees and a bag of their Jamaica Blue Mountain® whole bean coffee to review. Music icon Bob Marley yearned to return to farming someday, his son Rohan and friend Shane Whittle kept Marley’s dream alive by founding Marley Coffee. The company sources its beans from around the world, including Central America, Ethiopia, and Jamaica. The Jamaica beans are from a 52-acre private estate atop the Blue Mountains, known as a region with the best coffee beans. Marley Coffee partners with farms in Africa, Central America and other top coffee-growing regions worldwide to make their excellent coffee. Marley coffee is known for their support of communities and their commitment to the environment through organic, sustainable and ethical practices.

When opening the package of the ground coffee the coffee smell is strong and inviting. The Mystic Morning ground coffee was brewed with a French Press and was tasted with and without half and half.

When brewed the Mystic Morning coffee has a good coffee aroma. Mystic Morning has a deep roast taste upon the first sip which makes it very enjoyable. There is a full flavor of cocoa in the coffee but I did not get a strong cinnamon and spice flavor which is one of the hallmarks of Mystic Morning. I do love cinnamon in coffee but the spice I didn’t find was made up for by the full bodied taste of the coffee. Mystic Morning is strong and smooth, and its lingering taste is satisfying as you drink the coffee. Marley’s line of ground coffees is impressive and this final coffee of our Marley reviews is yet another good choice for coffee drinkers. Mystic Morning is a great way to wake-up and start your day, this is a full-flavored coffee I would recommend for your every day coffee.

smiling laptop computer

Back in the day, everybody had an office. It was in a building, with a desk you could put your stuff on, and a chair to sit in. Any more, though, with so many people telecommuting or self-employed, offices are few and far between. Maybe you could pile your stuff on the kitchen table to get your work done, but you’ll need to move the dishes and get rid of the pizza boxes. And then there’s the whole isolation thing: spending all your time by yourself worked for the Unabomber, but for most folks, there is some basic need for at least minimal human contact. For many people, the perfect solution is to go hang out in your local coffee dispensary. They’ve got chairs and tables, people, and most of ‘em have Wi-Fi too, so you’ve got everything you need for your proxy office. Turns out, though, most coffee shops are a lot more interested in selling you coffee than in giving you a free space to conduct business in, and many of them are starting to push back with tricks like covering up electrical outlets (you’re only good ’til your laptop battery poops out) and frequently changing Wi-Fi passwords (you need to buy another latte for this hour’s login). It’s probably a good idea to show your appreciation for the use of the space and go ahead and buy another cup—after all, a Frappuccino is a whole lot cheaper than paying rent on a real office.

Marley Coffee
Lively Up Espresso Medium Roast Ground Coffee
Price: $9.95 8 oz.

Marley Coffee was kind enough to send us free coffees to sample from their line of six ground coffees and a bag of their Jamaica Blue Mountain® whole bean coffee to review. Marley coffee is known for their support of communities and their commitment to the environment through organic, sustainable and ethical practices.

When opening the package of the ground coffee the coffee smell is strong and inviting. The Lively Up Espresso ground coffee was brewed with a French Press and also with a home espresso maker; it was tasted with and without half and half in both brewings.

When brewed the Lively Up espresso coffee had a strong roasted aroma and you can tell right away from the taste this is darker coffee with an espresso kick. The Lively Up ground coffee is darker like you would expect an espresso coffee to be. The Lively Up coffee is strong tasting and is the only Marley ground coffee we’ve tasted that has a hint of bitterness, which is what you’d find in a good cup of espresso coffee. The Lively Up is also not quite as smooth as some of the other Marley ground coffees which is typical of espressos I’ve had in the past. The Lively Up espresso tasted deep roasted and had chocolate tones with a long finish when tasting, it is a very good cup of coffee. We gladly recommend Marley’s Lively Up, it is a delicious espresso that will wake you up in the morning and get you going for the rest of the day.

Seattle Space Needle postage stamp

So what is it about Seattle and coffee? You already know that the ubiquitous Starbucks chain is headquartered there, but it turns out that’s also where a bunch of coffee-related hardware comes from as well. Three of the biggest names in serious espresso machines (sorry, Mr Coffee) either assemble or refurbish their machines in that Pacific Northwest location. These aren’t machines that you’re likely to pick up at your local Target, though, since some of them can retail for upwards of $20,000, depending on how pimped out they are. But why Seattle? Maybe it’s all the cold and dreary, or perhaps all those caffeine-fueled nerds at Microsoft.

Get Up, Stand Up Light Roast Ground Coffee

Marley coffee is known for their support of communities and their commitment to the environment through organic, sustainable and ethical practices.

When opening the package of the ground coffee the coffee smell is inviting. The Get Up, Stand Up ground coffee was brewed with a French Press and it was tasted with and without half and half. The Get Up, Stand Up coffee is lighter looking than the other ground coffee since it is a light roast. I tend to prefer darker roast coffees so this coffee is a little light for my taste and I found myself adding another scoop to make it stronger, but all-in-all this is very good coffee.

When brewed the Get Up, Stand Up coffee had a lighter roasted aroma. For light roast this coffee has good body, very often light roast can taste a bit wimpy, but Get Up, Stand Up is substantial in flavor. Get Up, Stand Up is a good tasting coffee with light floral and herb overtones. This is a very smooth and mellow coffee, one well suited for people who love drinking coffee all day long but can’t handle the bitterness or acid flavors that a dark roast coffee leaves after too many cups of coffee. For coffee drinkers who prefer a lighter coffee that isn’t bitter or too strong, Get Up, Stand Up is the perfect mellow choice for your every day coffee.

Sugai Kona Coffee
Coconut Cream Whole Bean Coffee
Price: $7.95 4 oz., $13.95 7 oz., $24.95 14 oz., $120.00 5 lbs.

Sugai Kona coffee was kind enough to send us free coffees to sample from their line of whole bean Kona coffees and flavored whole bean coffee to review. Sugai sent one of their favorite coffees, Kona Extra Fancy and their most popular flavored coffee, Coconut Cream in whole beans. You can order your Kona coffee as whole bean or ground coffee.

Sugai Products are producers of Sugai gourmet Kona coffee, coffee growers for three generations on the islands. Sugai has earned the official seal of approval of the Kona Coffee Council for their Kona coffee. Sugai is known for their tradition of producing rich, gourmet coffee flavor and aroma that comes only from Kona coffee. Sugai hand sorts and freshly roasts their coffee beans daily. Sugai mentioned their exceptional Kona coffee has to do with the trees on their farm some of which are 80 to 100 years old.

When opening the package of the whole bean coconut flavored coffee the coffee smell is definitely that of coconut and very aromatic. The Sugai Coconut Cream coffee was brewed with a French Press and it was tasted with and without half and half.

From tasting both samples of Sugai’s coffees you can tell they are very high quality coffee beans. Sugai’s coconut cream is their best selling flavored whole bean coffee. When brewed the Coconut Cream coffee has the aroma of coconut. My first sip of the Coconut Cream coffee was very good. So often when I’ve tried flavored coffees you get the great aroma of the flavor but when you taste it the flavor isn’t there. Sugai’s Coconut Cream coffee not only smells like coconut but tastes like coconut, not the overly sweet version you might get in desserts, but an earthy, vibrant coconut taste like you’d get from coconut in the shell. The Coconut Cream coffee is very smooth and has good body with a strong medium roast and coconut flavor. I would highly recommend Sugai’s Coconut Cream coffee for special occasions or for your every day coffee. Sugai’s Coconut Cream is a delicious coffee and one you will enjoy every time you drink it.

For many, who are addicted to coffee and particularly espresso, there is something dark, indulgent and seductive about coffee and caffeine.

Recent articles in the press have announced that a seemingly modest gourmet coffee habit of one cappuccino each and every day of your commute, could cost more than £700 a year (or $1,116.36 U.S. dollars) and pile on, wait for it, a colossal 60,000 calories!!

However, the calories are in the milk! Often full fat is used, so a skinny option is always an advisable optional extra in your latte or cappuccino …

The coffee part of your indulgence is, if recent research is anything to go by, good for you!

Many research studies over the past 10 or so years have indicated that consumption of 3 to 5 cups of coffee a day can:

1. Reduce the incidence of certain cancers such as prostrate and oral cancer
2. Reduce cholesterol levels
3. Reduce the likelihood of dying from cardiovascular disease
4. Prevent plaque and therefore tooth decay
5. Protect against gout
6. Reduce systolic and diastolic blood pressure
7. Positively aid digestion, especially as moderate coffee consumption is not diuretic and will assist with constipation
8. Reduce the incidence of cirrhosis of the liver
9. May reduce the onset of type 2 diabetes
10. May aid pain management and actively boosts the properties of many pain killers – hence why many over the counter preparations now contain caffeine
11. Increase cognitive performance and particularly short term recall ability
12. Reduce the risk of Parkinson’s disease
13. Reduce the risk of dementia
14. Result in a lower incidence of gallstones and gallbladders diseases
15. Reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s

WOW!

Seems we should be bathing in espresso … which, when you hear that alternative medicine now recommends coffee enemas, is perhaps not such a stupid suggestion as it sounds!!

Similarly, a big trend in Continental Europe, which we here at Aromo Coffee believe is set to take the UK market by storm, is stomach friendly, or mild coffees.

These are coffees where the green, unroasted bean is washed with saturated steam under humid pressure, for an hour or so.

The original system was patented in 1933 and produces a coffee which is more easily digestible for those with sensitive stomachs … because the steaming removes irritants which may cause, or exacerbate stomach ache, heart burn and acid indigestion.

Various reports – such as Albanese 1964 and Rahn 1979 – have concluded that there is a genuine change in the chemistry of steamed coffee with reductions in:

Tannin (24%)
Chlorogenic Acid (3%)
Mercaptomethane (11%)

So coffee should be a moderate part of a healthy diet and as Kenneth Williams would have said in those wonderful British 1970’s cream cake adverts … a cappuccino is ‘naughty but nice’ especially after a good workout … Go on treat yourself!

The Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee beans are grown in the Blue Mountains at an elevation of 7,500 feet. The climate is cool with an abundance of rain and rich soil, perfect conditions to grow this special coffee. The coffee beans are inspected by the Coffee Industry Board of Jamaica which regulates the quality of Jamaican coffee.

When opening the package of the whole bean coffee the coffee smell is strong and rich, similar to a dark roast even though this is a medium roast coffee. The Talkin’ Blues Jamaica Blue Mountain was brewed with a French Press and it was tasted with and without half and half. When you have the opportunity to grind your own beans it always gives you the best flavor in coffee.

When brewed the Jamaica Blue coffee has a strong roasted aroma. I particularly love strong roast coffee and this medium roast is plenty strong without the bitterness you often find with dark roast. The taste is subtle and flavorful with chocolate and herb overtones. This is a very good cup of coffee, and a real pleasure to taste. As with all Marley coffees the Jamaica Blue coffee is smooth tasting with minimal bitterness. Talkin’ Blues Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee is the first in a series of Marley’s Jamaica Blue coffees that will be offered, it is delicious and a great choice for that special coffee you want to savor on the weekends.

I have never traveled to the Hawaiian islands, and I have never tried Kona coffee. Having heard how good Kona coffee is, needless to say I was looking forward to tasting Kona coffee for the first time. When opening the package of the whole bean Kona coffee the coffee smell is inticing and very aromatic. Sugai says the Kona Extra Fancy are rare, extra large coffee beans. The Sugai Kona Extra Fancy coffee was brewed with a French Press and it was tasted with and without half and half.

When brewed the Kona Extra Fancy carries an intense aroma that is very inviting. My first sip of Kona Extra Fancy coffee was amazing with bright flavors that continued as I drank the coffee. Sipping the Kona coffee I felt as if I was on the Hawaiian islands. A coffee has to knock my socks off to earn a 5 rating which is the highest rating we hand out. Sugai Kona Extra Fancy is the first coffee at Caffeine Conspiracy to earn this highest rating from us because it truly is exceptional tasting coffee!

This is a strong, multi-layered 100% Kona coffee that is beautifully roasted and very special. The rich, medium-bodied coffee bursts with flavors of cocoa, sweet fruit and a buttery caramel. The Kona coffee is extremely smooth with no bitterness. The flavors can be tasted in every sip of this fine coffee along with a delicious lingering finish. Kona Extra Fancy is one of the best coffees I’ve ever tasted. I highly recommend you treat yourself to Sugai Kona Extra Fancy whole bean coffee, it is the ideal choice when you want to indulge in one of the best coffees available on the market.

cochineal insect

While that observation may be the punchline of a bad joke you heard once upon a time, it turns out that if you frequent a certain Seattle-based coffee chain you may indeed have bugs in your cup of Joe. Starbucks has released a statement letting everybody know that some of their drinks—specifically their Strawberry Frappuccinos—get their lovely color from an extract of dead, dried-up bugs. Now as luck would have it, they’re not the only outfit to use the mortal remains of cochineal insects to color their wares, if that makes you feel any better. Nevertheless, if you’re trying to go vegan, you’ll want to order something other than the pink Frapp.

Marley Coffee sent their ground coffee series for us to review and it has all been very good, imagine how good their whole bean coffee must be.

When opening the package of ground One Love coffee the coffee smell is inviting. The One Love Ethiopia Yirgacheffe ground coffee was brewed with a French Press and it was tasted with and without half and half.

When brewed the One Love coffee has an inviting aroma. The coffee is made from 100% Ethiopia Yirgacheffe beans. The coffee has a stronger, slightly more bitter aftertaste like dark roast for a medium roast, and a little kick to it. One Love has a nice roasted flavor that is deep for a medium roast, but at the same time as I am finding with all the Marley coffees it is smooth and mellow tasting. One Love has a pronounced nutty taste and deep fruit flavor that makes this an interesting coffee. This coffee is perfect for people who want a stronger medium roast without the full-on bitterness of dark roast coffees. One Love’s flavors are unique and make this a ground coffee worthy of drinking every day.
